My God She’s Only A Freshman!

January 24th, 2008

Last night I finally had the chance to peek over at UConnPhil’s videos. I was watching the highlights from recent UConn games and I finally got to see what the fuss over Maya Moore is all about. She literally defies awesome, man. The moves, the jumpshots, the rebounds, the whatever-else’s — all smooth and beautiful. Auriemma did a very good job in snagging her — despite the whole recruitment thing being enmeshed in that messy hullabaloo with Tennessee.

Anyway, Atlanta JC wrote about their favorite Georgia daughter Moore in this article. Maya Moore is definitely better than advertised.

The two-time national player of the year at Collins Hill is all New England’s now. A new Mayan culture is springing up around the 6-foot bundle of smooth. Granted, these people up here sure do talk funny, and they live part time in a meat locker, but they also take their women’s basketball seriously. It is a terrific place to build a legend, conveniently close to the myth-makers of New York City.

Somehow, Diana Taurasi comes to mind. But what the hell, for all we know she may even be better than Taurasi.

Tar Heels Boohaha

January 24th, 2008

UConn has beaten the Tar Heels!  Boohahahaha!

Score: 82 - 71

P. O. G.: Shooting Guard (oh yes, awesome awesome shooting guard) Renee Montgomery posted 26 monster points on 9-24 shooting (6-13 3Pts).  I miss Mel though. But Renee is doing such a fine job at the 2 so I guess it’s okay.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Super-Freshman Maya Moore — 19 pts, 7 boards, 4 assists. Yeah, that’s pretty normal production from her.
  • Tina Charles — the former Christ the King star shot 15 points, matched her career record with 19 boards, and blocked 7 shots!
  • Charde Houston — with senior Brittany Hunter out for the third straight game because of swelling in her surgically-repaired knee, Charde finally has a spot in the game. The long-time dweller of Geno’s doghouse managed 15 points — all in the second half.

Ranking: #1 AP Top 25 & USA Today/ESPN; #1 Big East
Standings: 18-0 (5-0 Big East)

I’m So Frikkin’ Excited

January 21st, 2008

…it’s not even funny.

Sunday, bloody sunday. I can’t wait for you, Sunday! Woohoo!

Lineup Shuffled, Still a Win

January 20th, 2008

UConn held on to beat Cincinnati 86-49 yesterday at Hartford. This is the first game without starting shooting guard Mel Thomas (shown in the picture at the left) who went down with a season-ending knee injury last week — the 2nd one in UConn’s string of unfortunate knee injury events this season (Kalana Greene ACL in December).

Guard Renee Montgomery (shown while in the middle of a jumpshot in the picture) was moved to the shooting guard position and was tasked to carry most of the scoring burden (and deliver those three’s that Mel was known for). Monty responded by scoring a career-high 27 points and made SEVEN of 11 three-pointers (10-of-17 from the floor). She finished the game just three points shy of career 1,000. Monty is just a junior — a lot more can be expected from her. Super-freshman Maya Moore scored 21 points and grabbed 11 boards while sophomore Kaili McLaren had 10 points and 10 rebounds as UConn improves to 17-0 over-all (5-0 Big East).

Freshman guard Lorin Dixon (Christ the King HS) made her first career start at the point (halleluiah for Christ the King point guards :p). Lorin didn’t have a single turnover for over 20 minutes before losing the ball on a drive early in the 2nd half. She tallied 7 dishes and 3 TO’s. Not bad not bad.

Oh No, Mel Thomas!

January 17th, 2008

Season and college is over for UConn Guard Mel Thomas. Noooooo! UConn loses its second starter to knee injury. Mel tore her ACL and lateral meniscus in the right knee.

Thomas ends her career ranked fourth all-time at UConn in 3-pointers made with 224. She tallied 1,098 points during her four years with the Huskies, and was the team’s third-leading scorer this season, averaging more than 10 points a game. She had not missed a free throw in 17 attempts.

For The Love Of The Game

January 15th, 2008

Whattup? Another baller blog! Hop on to Ladies’ Court and catch up on your women’s bball news, be it NCAAW, WNBA, or international ball.

Here I go again. May is nearing (yes, in under 4 months, WNBA season will start again) and the once bleak and depressing aura around the Storm has upped and left, leaving only a mood worthy of partying ala-2004. Plus March Madness is just around the corner and UConn is just fantabulous this year. Hope they don’t choke late in the tourneys. Tsk.

Why do I do this again? Why do I love basketball — or all sports in general?

Just like Joe from Ladies’ Court said in this entry, it’s quite simple — it is an outlet. And it has brought him closer to his career. For me, it brought me closer to something that I love(d) so much. I know I’m not that much of a player (basketball player, dude, basketball player, not any other player that would cross your mind) and I’m not the most rabid fan ever but I do my share (i.e. Seattle Storm addiction). Plus, I love to blabber about anything so why not write about something I really really like huh?

My best sports memory would be my senior year in high school. I know, I know, we had very crappy (and almost non-existent) programs but I enjoyed the hell out of my teams. I absolutely love the camaraderie brought about by sports. During that time in my life, I found some of the few indispensable friends that I will keep for life. Just having the chance to spend those endless training hours with them is enough to put those moments in the best memory category.

I also enjoy being a spectator. It’s loads of fun, I’m telling ya. And I also met a lot of awesome people just because I happen to be really addicted to the Storm. I can’t believe I’ve known Amits and Luisa since 2004 (and it’s already 2008). I can’t believe I’ve been chatting with Jessica for quite a long time already. And also, not to mention the bunch of us that would congregate over the Storm Chat during games — fans from Aus and London and wherever else.

So yeah. There. Anyhoo, I completely forgot the point of this entry. Oh wait — I think I just wanted to answer Joe’s question here. Hee.
